If you think that modern weapons are complex, the limits of 17 and early 18th Century, whose survival often depends on its ability to load and fire a flintlock in a hurry. Loading and firing a gun was a twelve-step process, which is not always successful. (Rifles have been notoriously unreliable in flames.) As Daniel Boone had a reputation as a shooter with his Kentucky rifle, the shooter must have been a world-class for the beginning, is loaded andready to fire - much less actually do something with him - it was a long and complicated process!
Here are the twelve steps to load and shoot a rifle or shotgun flintlock:
1. Biting the paper cartridge and open it with his teeth.
2. Slide the attacker (the so-called Frissen) for the front and a small amount of flash powder in the pan.
The powder in the pan should light the main charge of powder into the combustion chamber of the cylinder, which thenguide the lead bullet from the barrel. But the spark struck from flint often causes a rapid explosion in a pan that could ignite the main charge. This is where we get our expression, a "flash in the pan."
3. Slide the cover Frissen again be able to Flash Pan.
4. Hold the gun with the muzzle up.
5. Pour the remaining powder into the barrel from the muzzle.
6. Place a ball of lead in the race.
7. Push the paper cartridgein the chamber (called the "cotton").
8. Remove the rod from its storage tube under the barrel and use it to push the wadding and the ball in the barrel.
It was easier to do with a rifle as a gun. The rifle had run a diameter slightly larger, and its inner surface was smooth. A gun metal was spiral grooves in the race, which turned the ball as he cut the end of the race, so that the accuracy of the flight. The headquarters of thethe ball in the course had to give force to the rotation, so that the grooves and small diameter made it difficult to floss and ball completely to ram through the combustion chamber.
Guns were fired further and more precise, but the flame was the main reason rifles still being used by military units until the end of 1800. In a battle where to download the new timetable and a fire was a matter of life or death, the rate of fire was an important factor. L 'Invention, the metal cartridges and breech-loading (loading of the ball through an opening on the back of the barrel near the combustion chamber) to finally put an end to military dominance in the muskets.
9. Replace the wand into the pipe storage.
10. Raise the gun at a firing position, strengthen the stock against his shoulder.
11. Pull the hammer.
12. Aim and shoot.
We have all seen scenes in movies where an intrepid pioneers, a little time tothe danger, just let the wand in and shot, instead of the precious extra seconds to remove and replace the barrel in the storage tube. The rod was then pushed some of the ammunition from the barrel when the shot charge.
In an extreme situation in which those few seconds as it were a matter of life or death, this might have been possible. But you have time, the baton from wherever they flew again, would the loss ofuseless weapon, and a replacement would be difficult to come to the border, it seems unlikely that the border guards in the habit of the practice, unless it was really a matter of life or death.
What happened to the load, when it was used, but in the previous steps that the loading and firing a gun was far from a simple clear sentence. Daniel Boone, with his gun, and countless other Kentucky border guards and soldiers, weapons, gun certainly deserve our admirationfor the opportunity to deal with a high degree of dexterity and skill!
