When I got my first metal detector I thought this could be a fun part-time hobby. However, little did I know that after I found my first old coin it would become a fun obsession. With just a few basic items you too can begin your search for buried treasure.
Basic tools necessary to begin your hunt are a metal detector (obviously), something to dig with, a small bucket or pockets to carry your bounty, and of course permission to search if you are on private property. No one can deny that finding hidden valuable items will get your heart pumping. After your first find you too will understand.
My favorite story happened in 2009 when a hoard was discovered in July by Englishman Terry Herbert. Using a metal detector he bought in a garage sale for only a few dollars. Terry uncovered the largest Anglo-Saxon gold hoard ever found. He found over 500 items before he called in the experts. They then found another 800 articles in the soil.
Once the hoard is sold, the proceeds will go to Terry and the owner of the field where the hoard was discovered. The pair agreed to split the amount which is expected to be in the millions. Not bad for a day of treasure hunting.
You can begin your search for your million dollar hoard by buying a simple metal detector at first. Something around $150 or so will do. Also, you will have to be patient and practice just like any other hobby. Try local parks or around football or baseball stadiums where people have gathered. You will soon be picking up loose change, pocket knives, etc. If you live near Civil War battle fields, this is an excellent place to search for valuable relics. Use your imagination and you too will get the metal detecting bug.
